How Do I Configure My Computer To Get Sound To Come Through My Headphones?

Hello. I have a HP Compaq desktop computer and my brother just installed Vista onto it last night. Before that, we had Windows XP. Anyway, after the installation, I noticed that I can only get sound through the computer, but when I instert my headphones into the headphone port on the drive, sound still only comes through the computer and not my headphones. How do I configure the computer to correct this?

This feature is not a software controlled but hardware controlled, seems to be a problem with the headphones port. When you insert the headphone jack, the sound should be transmitted to the headphones.
the only possible cause is something is stuck inside it which is causing this problem.
And finally are you putting the jack in the right port, there should be two or for some models three, generally its the green one, or the one with a headphone image.

Does your computer emit sounds through the speaker? Did you install the latest drivers or even compatible drivers for Vista? The drivers for XP aren’t compatible with Vista.. try right-clicking the speaker-like icon on your system tray, click “Open volume mixer”. Look for the volume levels if they’re left maxed out or not.

Well… You figure out what sound card you have, then you download the Vista drivers for it. If they exist. Also.. does your computer have more than one headphone jack? if so try using the other one. It’s possible it just can’t “find” the jack if there be two. You need Vista drivers for the card though.. Vista is a different dragon than XP.

Is the headphone jack on cd/dvd drive? If so, try installing the cd/dvd drive driver for vista.
If not, install the sound driver made for Vista.
